As of this Thursday 14th, Inema(Brazil’s Institute for the Environment and Water) published Resolution Nº 2253 in Bahia State’s DiárioOficial, granting the Prior License for the expansion process of VeracelCelulose S.A.

This is the first stage of the enterprise’s process of expansion. The Prior License granted will enable the stockholders to assess and decide upon the best opportunity for Veracel’s expansion.

Veracel filed the application for this license with Bahia State’s environmental body in December 2007. In 2009 IMA (Institute for the Environment) – now Inema – put Public Workshops in place, where Terms of Reference were discussed, leading to the environmental agency’s setting Veracel’s guidelines for carrying out the Environmental Impact Study for the expansion process. In 2011 Inema held Public Audiences where this study was presented and discussed.

In accordance with the Resolution published in this Thursday’s DiárioOficial (14th March), the license granted by Inema is valid for 4 (four) years, for expansion of the bleached eucalyptus pulp manufacturing unit, with nominal production capacity of 1,500,000adt/year, side by side with Veracel’s present production line and a 93,000 hectare actually planted forest base spread out over the municipalities of Belmonte, Canavieiras, Encruzilhada, Guaratinga, Itabela, Itapetinga, Itagimirim, Itarantim, Itapebi, Maiquinique, Macarani, Mascote, Porto Seguro andPotiraguá, by means of compliance with current legislation and the ongoing conditions set out in the Resolution governing the process.
