Veracel Station was acquired in 1992, when Veracel Celulose S.A. acquired a large rural property from Floresta Rio Doce, located in the far south of Bahia. In 1994, Veracruz Station was established and started receiving visitors. Six years later, in 1998, the Station was recognized as a Private Reserve of Natural Patrimony (RPPN) by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama).

In 1999, the Veracel Station RPPN was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as part of the Discovery Coast Atlantic Forest Reserve, inscribed as a World Natural Heritage Site, confirming the universal and exceptional value of a natural area which requires protection for the benefit of mankind. In 2006, its name was altered to Veracel Station RPPN

Located within the Atlantic Forest biome, approximately 15 km from the Porto Seguro historic center, on the Brazil’s Discovery Coast, Veracel Station RPPN has 6,069 hectares, extending across the municipalities of Porto Seguro and Santa Cruz Cabralia.

The area is part of the Atlantic Forest Central Corridor, therefore increasing even further the importance of the protected area.

Veracel Station RPPN has a fundamental role in the integration with the region’s conservation units, both public and private, in addition to developing a continuous relationship with the nearby communities and interaction with forest fragments through the formation of ecological corridors

Since 1992, Veracel has been supporting a number of studies on the fauna and flora at the Veracel Station RPPN, carried out in partnership with universities, research centers and non-governmental organizations. In addition, environmental education activities are developed at the reserve, using the technique of Living with Nature, in which visitors can come in contact and live experiences in the environment.
