
Veracel will produce 350,000 native seedlings in 2003 - 04.10.03
In 2003, Veracel will produce 350,000 native species seedlings to help in the recovery of 200 hectares of degraded land in the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica). The project mainly will benefit riparian buffer zones protecting fresh water springs and deactivated quarries as part of the Veracel Mata Atlântica Program. The project consists of the conservation and recovery of 70,000 hectares of the Atlantic Forest that belongs to the company in the extreme south of the state of Bahia.
Since it was established in 1994, the Veracel Mata Atlântica Program has produced more than two million seedlings of native species used for the environmental recovery of degraded areas and an urban tree planting projects. In the past eight years, just in these projects alone some 100,000 native seedlings have been planted in the towns of Belmonte, Canavieiras, Eunápolis, Guaratinga, Itabela, Itagimirim, Itapebi, Porto Seguro and Santa Cruz Cabrália, thus collaborating to improve the quality of life in these communities.
