57,000 m³ of eucalyptus sold in the region in 2002 - 05.28.03

photoDuring 2002, Veracel sold to small businesses in its region some 57,000 m³ of eucalyptus logs for various purposes, such as production of crates to package fruit, furniture manufacturing, general construction and for making charcoal. A total of 2,850 trucks hauled the logs from the company’s fields, taking ecologically correct raw materials to businesses responsible for the generation of more than 400 jobs in nearby cities and towns.

Each cubic meter of the eucalyptus tree is sufficient to produce 80 fruit crates. The use of eucalyptus in this activity is important not only for the economy, but also for the environment. Its use directly implies the conservation of remaining forest remnants, especially the Atlantic Forest, which is the original vegetation that covered the extreme south of the state of Bahia where Veracel is located. It is estimated that about 95% of the construction support wood used in the region comes from eucalyptus trees, as well as practically 100% of the temporary buildings at construction sites for accommodation, warehouses, fencing and campsites.
