The commander of the Military Police force of the state of Bahia, Col. Antônio Jorge Ribeiro de Santana, inaugurated barracks in 30th April in the municipalities of Itapebi and Barrolândia, built, furnished and donated to the communities by Veracel. Col. Santana furthermore received the keys to three police cars that will pulp in the security efforts of the force in these locations, which are the closest to the area where Veracel is building a pulp mill, from Veracel’s President and CEO, Vitor Costa.
The two buildings — one located next to worker housing in Barrolândia and the other their the center of Itapebi – contain offices, a kitchen, bathrooms, dormitories, dressing rooms, a pantry and parking garage. “We are quite satisfied to have facilities of this level in hinterland towns to house our military policemen. It represents the transformation of a dream into reality,” said the police commander.
“We know that Veracel has an important role to play in the development of the region, and we are paying a lot of attention to the probable impacts that need to be minimized, such as an accumulation of people in Itapebi and Barrolândia,” said Costa at the ceremony delivering the barracks and the cars to the chiefs of the local units (7ª CIPM), Capt. Ivanildo Silva, and (8º BpPM) Major Paulo de Tarso Uzêda. “Veracel is giving us a lesson in citizenship, foreseeing an increase occurrences and anticipating them by improving the security structure for the population,” added Col. Santana. He said “when the policeman feels appreciated he transmits this to his actions on behalf of the community”.
