General work stoppage by construction workers at the Veracel mill - 11.05.04
Employees of the construction companies hired by Veracel Celulose S/A to build its pulp mill in Eunápolis, Bahia, demonstrated on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 4 and 5) in front of the main gate to the construction site and on stretches of the access highway is to the location, blocking access of other construction personnel and administration employees to their places of work.
The demonstration, aimed at the construction contractors, surprised everybody since the outsourced companies have signed a collective bargaining agreement with the construction workers union (Sintepav) which is valid until January 2005, which was fully agreed to by all signatories. At no time have the leaders of the work stoppage entered into contact with their employers to register any complaints that might have led to such a mobilization.
The companies involved are taking the necessary legal steps and involving the appropriate authorities to ensure the safety and physical integrity of their employees and third parties, as well as to safeguard their assets.
Veracel and the construction contractors both state that this situation be resolved peacefully and in an orderly manner, and that good sense shall guide the next decisions and actions taken by the leaders of the movement.
