Community health initiative mobilizes public and private sectors - 06.06.05
Veracel delivered more than R$ 250,000 in medical equipment — such as a birthing table, X-ray machine, wheelchairs, ultrasound unit, portable respirator and electrocardiogram — on June 2 to the Eunápolis Regional Hospital, part of its program to support local public health. The initiative was the first step together with the Eunápolis city government for involving members of the local community, businessmen and the public sector to improve the conditions in hospitals and health clinics in this municipality.
“Today, a new period is beginning in terms of health in the city of Eunápolis,” said Mayor Robério Oliveira at a ceremony presenting the project, held at the Eunápolis city council building. According to the mayor, the partnership with Veracel will make it possible for the city to reduce costs for some medical procedures currently being outsourced in private hospitals and clinics, especially X-rays and laboratory tests. Oliveira also noted that this investment will make it possible to reform hospitals, build new health clinics in neighborhoods and hire specialized physicians.
Veracel’s President and CEO, Vítor Costa, who was present at the event, said that quality health must be one of the constant concerns not only of Veracel but also of all other local companies. Representatives of some of Veracel’s service suppliers, such as Multiplus, Mirel Construtora, Lemos Passos, Bomfim and Expresso Brasileiro, were on hand for the event and they also guaranteed that they will contribute to improve health in the region. “It is very important that, like Veracel, our partners come up with investment ideas and projects and collaborate, since they all also are users of the health services. If each one of us does our part, medical assistance here will be much better,” Costa said.
He added that Veracel had invested over the past three years some R$ 6 million in partnership projects in the field of health in the municipalities where the company has operations. These projects include, for example, programs to eradicate leprosy and combat tuberculosis, the maintenance of the municipal hospital at Itagimirim and a number of individual actions, such as training health managers, paying for manpower and medicines for local hospitals and clinics.
