Employees at Veracel create small woodlands area to commemorate the mill's first year of operation
The Veracel pulp mill's first year of operation was commemorated on May 22 by the company's own employees and outsourced workers with the planting of more than 260 species of Atlantic Forest trees seedlings within the internal area of the industrial facility. This was the first step for the creation of a woodlands area on the property. The employees were treated to a live concert, participated in a special lunch and were given gifts commemorating the occasion. A special lunch also was offered to the members of the seedling nursery teams, the employees at the marine terminal and eucalyptus harvest modules and those on duty at Veracel Station.
The objective of creating a small wooded area was to foster concepts of sustainability among the employees through respect for nature, something that already has been adopted by the company in its forestry and industrial activities. The new location initially will receive 24 different species of Atlantic Forest trees. Among them are pioneer species, such as aroeirinha, embaúba and gurindiba; secondary initial species, including pau sangue, biriba and araçá vermelho; secondary climax species such as jequitibá branco and pau ferro as well as noble timber such as cedar, pau brasil and ipê amarelo.
Message from the shareholders
The presidents of Veracel's two shareholders, Aracruz Celulose and Stora Enso, sent a message complementing the employees, stating "surpassing targets has been a constant hallmark of this great project." They noted that the mill was built in world record time of just 22 months. "Reaching full capacity occurred only 172 days after it came on stream. And, finally, the production of 3,500 tons of 100%-quality pulp on a single line was the culmination of a series of goals that had never previously been met by any pulp mill in the world," according to the statement.
