Public schools gain computer and reading rooms

On June 12, the Professora Elena Pereira de Pinho, in Eunápolis, and Padre José de Anchieta municipal schools in Porto Seguro inaugurated computer rooms - each containing 10 computers, printers and appropriate furniture. And on June 14, it was the turn of the Luís Eduardo Magalhães Model School in Porto Seguro to inaugurate its Languages and Literature environment. These projects, in partnership with Veracel Celulose, are part of the company's educational program that seeks to contribute to the quality of the education that is offered the 10,000 public and private school students in the municipalities of Eunápolis and Porto Seguro.

According to the director of the Elena de Pinho school, Maria da Conceição Rodrigues, with the new facilities the institution will be the second municipal school in Eunápolis, of the 35 that are operating, to have computers available for the students. "The equipment will be used by the instructors as a teaching tool for Mathematics, Portuguese, Geography, Science and History," she said. "It is something that we are trying to do for the future: have a quality school of which we all can be proud," added the teaching coordinator of the Padre Anchieta School, Neive Ladeia.

The school directors, teachers and hundreds of students threw a party to receive the Languages and Literature room at the Luís Eduardo Magalhães Model School. The Metamorfose theatrical troupe - made up of students of the school itself - participated in the event, presenting a piece that was written and directed by them and inspired in the poem "Slave Ship" by Bahian poet Castro Alves, whose name baptized the room.

"This is the finalization of work that has been underway inside and outside of the classrooms for some five years, ever since the school was inaugurated," said the director of the institution, Marília Rios. The room contains 1,326 volumes by 27 different authors such as Machado de Assis, Jorge Amado, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, João Ubaldo Ribeiro, Graciliano Ramos, Clarice Lispector, Rubem Braga, José de Alencar, among others, as well as dictionaries, a computer and furniture. According to Literature teacher Waldilene Maria Pereira, the room "will change the reality of the school, because reading is growth, it is travel, it is discovery."

Veracel Educational program

With scheduled investments totaling R$ 1,300,000.00, the program consists of two major lines of action: the Veracel Project - Partner Schools and support of urban public grade and middle schools. These actions are part of a package of 14 projects designed to improve the management, teaching quality and spaces and material resources of the schools.

The company also runs seminars and events to give new training to some 400 and a training program for 40 school directors, vice directors and teaching coordinators. The program goes beyond improvements in infrastructure and material resources, providing assistance for school management and student learning.
