Veracel wins FGV Business Excellence Award
Company is one of 2005's highlights, in the "Greatest increase in sales per company operation" category
Veracel Celulose, which recently completed one year of operation, was one of the highlights of the 16th FGV Business Excellence Prize, awarded August 14 in São Paulo. The company, which is a partnership of Brazil's Aracruz Celulose and Stora Enso of Sweden-Finland, received the award in the "Greatest increase in sales per company operation" category. Conceded since 1991 by the Fundação Getúlio Vargas' Brazilian Economy Institute (IBRE), the prize honors the 12 best companies in Brazil in their sectors, based upon the ranking of the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the country.
Veracel is in 210th place on the list of the 500 largest companies as surveyed by the Conjuntura Econômica magazine and the tenth largest in the state of Bahia, according to the same publication.
"I would like to dedicate this award to our shareholders, Aracruz and Stora Enso, to the directors who have diligently managed the company and to our own and our outsourced employees, who have led Veracel in such a short amount of time to become a world benchmark in the paper and pulp industry," said Renato Guéron, president and CEO of Veracel, upon accepting the award.
In its first year of operations, Veracel, which was born as one of the largest Brazilian companies, sold 392,000 tons of pulp, generating revenues of R$ 323.5 million. According to a survey conducted by the FGV, the company's sales rose 181.8% over 2004. It was this increase that put the company in first place among those that increased their sales through operations with their principal activity.
The FGV Business Excellence Prize is designed to recognize successful business efforts that contribute to the development of the nation and serve as a benchmark for other companies seeking excellence. Throughout its existence, the prize has been awarded to 116 companies, many of them on more than one occasion.
