FOOD SECURITY AND LAND CULTIVATION

Six women, who are Miramar Association farmers, have shown determination in the face of restrictions and had the first production sales experience through the UFSB and Veracel partnership. Counting on the supply provision and technical support, they planted one hectare and harvested one ton of watermelon, generating a morale boost to break into the year 2021 with renovated hope.

Working collectively with the Esalq coordination, they planted 68 hectares of market gardens, reconciling social distancing with food security.

FARMING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FOREST!

The Meio da Mata village, in Porto Seguro, has adopted beekeeping and meliponiculture with an significant women and youngsters participation in training, starting income generation initiatives in this traditional community. During this project´s articulation process with the village´s leadership, another opportunity was identified in March, 2020: the Pataxó community partner with Veracel to start a subsistence farming. The collective farming has been successful, and more than 2.5 tons of food were farmed, complementing the food supplies of 59 families and sharing extra food with neighboring villages. In addition to the food production during the year, villagers have already set aside seeds for new harvests.

TRADITION AND EDUCATION

Our “Educação é Vida” program, carried out in the villages located in our area of opeartions, have helped to increase children’s self-esteem and reduced school dropout over the past few years. The program goes beyond the delivery of school materials by including educational actions related to environment, renovations and construction of classrooms and schools, infrastructure improvements, sanitation improvement, access to drinking water, among other priorities defined with managers of the educational units in the villages.
